So true! I wasn't aware of that side of Pinterest but can relate a lot to the tiktokification. My coworkers all use it & ask me when I'll join. It's cute that they send each other reels based on common interests but I have to stop myself from lecturing every time they ask me... Don't you want to do something more worthwhile with your life? Learn or create something for yourself?
I want to make & own unique things. I also try to be conscious of my footprint although it isn't always possible where I live. It gives me joy to not own many things. I hope more people will start rejecting consumerism in the future so in that vein, thank you for this piece. It's a great contribution :)
thank you for commenting! i completely agree with you on the time lost to tiktok! i am also concerned that people have lost a lot of their power of choice when it comes to how they spend their time. we are being encouraged on to these platforms to find connection so it completely makes sense to me that they would want to connect with you via tiktok! not that I am saying it's good to spend all that time on there, but when we are being encouraged to be so individualistic, perhaps it's a good thing that we can find connection in these small way! And yes, I am really really hoping that we move away from consumerism and in turn reclaim more of our time which we can spend with our communities!
yes!! i'm so glad i am not the only person who has been feeling this way!!! it's so infuriating!! and so true about the critical thinking skills haha. i also wonder about the echo chamber thing!!! my colleagues are all early 20's who go clubbing and to raves and they're constantly talking about how they need to buy new outfits for every event and it's so infuriating!! even some people who have critical thinking skills just don't seem to get it!!! the auto-response of just going to these fast-fashion companies is so insane and i don't understand how people can justify it!! ah thank you for getting where i'm coming from! i am so relieved! and i am glad i could help with the firming up of those thoughts! that has literally made my evening!!
i know that it's by design that less and less people are willing/able to actually read and engage with longform content in any meaningful way and the knowing honestly makes it worse. i feel like i am going to go insane eventually just watching the world burn down because people are allowing themselves to become sheep to billionaires. it makes me feel so sick. hopefully the small corner of the internet we find ourselves on grows and people beging to understand what is being stolen from them!
